Bathrooms are used daily, which means bacteria can spread, mould could start to build up and foul odors can make their way into the air. By cleaning your bathroom, you can make sure your space stays fresh and improve the longevity of your bathroom.

Let’s look at why cleaning your bathroom is so important and which areas you should focus on.

Prevent Stains Before They Set In

If you don’t clean your bathroom regularly, then you’ll quickly see stains start to accumulate. Hard water, soap residue, and mineral deposits are common culprits — especially around fixtures and shower areas. These marks are completely normal with daily use, however, if they are left too long they can become an unsightly, more permanent feature. This is where the power of a regular clean comes in.

Walls

Your wall tiles are one place in your bathroom where stains can seem to appear out of nowhere. Many wall tiles such as those made from natural stone have a porous surface which means water can seep into them and dry which causes problems like damage, mineral build up, mould and stains.

How to clean:

Before scrubbing, use steam or run a hot shower to soften any dirt or grime. You can then use a gentle cleaning solution, like warm water with dish soap  or a mix of baking soda and water, applied with a non-abrasive cloth or sponge. Be careful not to scrub too hard as this can damage the tile or grout.

If you have PVC wall panels, they’re easier to clean due to them not having grout, waterproof, and being less porous (better for preventing mould). So warm water and a bit of dish soap on a soft cloth will do the trick — and avoid using any products with bleach in.

Fixtures and Toilets:

Toilets and fixtures often suffer with the same issue: limescale buildup. Unfortunately this can make your toilets and sinks look dirty even if they've just been cleaned. The longer you leave the buildup, the harder it will be to fix it. So it’s important to give them a little clean weekly.

How to clean:

  • Sinks and fixtures - For a more regular clean, a little warm water and some dish soap help to get rid of grime on fixtures, then buffing with a dry microfiber cloth afterwards will leave it sparkly.
    • However sometimes this isn’t enough if the limescale has been left for too long. If this is the case, soaking the area in white vinegar can get rid of stubborn limescale deposits. If this is your first time using a new cleaning solution in the area, be sure to check in an inconspicuous place first to make sure it's suitable.
  • Toilets - Similar to sinks, toilets also suffer from limescale build up. This can make your toilet look dirty even after it’s been cleaned.

Tip: Be sure to check your toilet isn’t leaking water in the bowl  as the constant dripping can lead to more limescale build up.

Mould

A warm environment is ideal for mould to thrive. Without good ventilation, bathrooms can become a hotspot for spores, which can damage surfaces and impact your health.

How to avoid mould:

Make sure your bathroom is well-ventilated. Open windows after showers, and ensure your extractor fan is working efficiently. Give it a clean roughly every six months.. If there’s a build up of dirt, your extractor fan probably won’t work as well.

Cleaning your extractor fan:

  1. Turn off the power
  2. Remove the cover and clear out dust with a hoover or soft brush
  3. Wash the cover with warm, soapy water and let it dry fully before reattaching

Watching out for blockages:

Blocked drains might seem minor at first, but they can quickly lead to bigger issues. But by not keeping on top of the drainage it can lead to a costly repair bill from a plumber.

How to keep drains clear:

It’s important to check your drains for any build up of debris or hair, however If you do notice a blockage that doesn’t seem to be clearing, here’s a simple way to clear it:

Start by removing any visible hair or debris from the drain. Then pour 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar. You will see some bubbling — and that’s normal! After about ten minutes, flush it down with hot water.

Sealant

Sealant (silicon sealant) plays an important role in making sure the edges around the bath, shower, and sink, don't leak into unwanted areas. Over time, sealant can get old and wear away — or peel off completely.

How to clean:

Clean gently with a non-abrasive cloth or sponge and avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can weaken or lift the sealant. If you notice any gaps or black mould that doesn’t come off, it’s best to remove and replace the sealant. Leaving it too long can result in a structural repair.
