1868 - The first vacuum cleaner is patented, but it did not work well. It could only suck up dry materials like sawdust and coal dust.

1876 - "Grand Rapids" were invented - a carpet sweeper with brushes connected to wheels. Melville R. Bissell was the inventor of "Grand Rapids".

1898 - John S. Thurman of St. Louis, Missouri, invented a "pneumatic carpet renovator" which was gasoline powered.

1901 - Hubert Cecil Booth from England invents the first motorized vacuum cleaner and it becomes popular in theaters.

1905 - Walter Griffiths invented the  first vacuum cleaner that could be used on both carpets and floors.

1909 - James Braid of Scotland invents the first vacuum cleaner with a dust bag.

1920 - The Hoover Company is founded by William H. Hoover.

1927 - Electrolux is founded in Sweden by Axel Wenner-Gren.

1974 - The world's first cordless vacuum cleaner, the Dyson DC01, was invented by James Dyson.

1991 - The Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner was invented by Rodney Brooks and Colin Angle.

2018 - The Ecovacs Deebot N79S robot vacuum cleaner was released, which can be controlled with voice commands using Amazon Echo or Google Home devices.

This company produced electric vacuum cleaners for homes during the 1920s , which were much more popular than any previous models at that time.

5. James B Hoover

James Brian "Jim" Hoover (born 1955) is an American entrepreneur from Ohio who founded a successful company called Hoovers Inc., known today as The Hoover Company. Hoover vacuum cleaners are some of the most popular vacuum cleaners in the world.

6. Melville R. Bissell

Melville Bissell began working on a carpet sweeper following the financial panic of 1873 and the economic depression that came after. In 1876, Bissell patented a sweeper with rubber wheels, a central brush, as well as other features.

Unfortunately, in 1884, a fire destroyed his very first factory. Despite this obstacle in his life, he was able to overcome the loss and still later expand his business. Now, Bissell vacuums are sold all over the world and are used in millions of homes to clean messes.

7. Electrolux

Electrolux is a Swedish company that produces a number of household appliances, including vacuum cleaners. They were one of the first companies to produce cordless vacuum cleaners and upholstery vacuum cleaners.

8. Panasonic
